Independence brings out the strength

In all of us to stand alone

Undaunted by the challenges

As solid as a wall of stone

By standing all alone we find

In fact alone we really are

To those we love we become blind

As distant as the farthest star.

‘Tis difficult for friends to give

When there is no one there to take

Dependency brings out the needs

That all of us try to conceal

The part that is vulnerable

That weakness we fear to reveal

A false sense of security

For we all know when we demand

We forfeit our equality

Our needs dictate our each command

‘Tis difficult for friends to take

When asking leaves no time to give

Interdependence helps us bare

Our soul, not merely to ourselves

But to the world and those who care

Communal strength thus gained compels

us to grow stronger and more wise

‘Though able to do things alone

When others help, we realize

In that solid wall we’re but a stone

‘Tis easier for friends to share

To give and take shows that we care.
