Chapter 17 A Full Bucket
DAY 13 THURSDAY JUNE 14TH

The bright morning sun is beating down into the face of the travelers blinding them as the rays filters through the dust and morning fog. Arlie is riding his horse alongside the cattle. He is doubled over in his saddle, with a blanket wrapped tightly around his shoulders, his head nearly resting on his horse’s mane. Mary Barnett and Victoria are riding at the front of one of the wagons. The observe Arlie in his pretzel position, prompting Mary to show her concern.

“This trip’s been mighty hard on my brother.”

Victoria nods in agreement with Mary.

“Yeah… the rest of us are doing great. We are all eating three square meals a day, but not Arlie.”

Mary looks somber as she pokes a finger into her left leg just below the knee.

“It’s that dad blamed leg. He’s in pain and now has a fever.
