Chapter 12 Pushing the Limits Day 8 June 9th

With a warm sun glowing in the clear blue sky, the end of another day traveling comes to a close. The cattle are secured for the night. A few remaining sandwiches are set out for anyone that may need a snack following the early dinner. A wash basin sits nearby for the men to wash their hands. A few men in the crew ignore the more sanitary approach and instead just grab a sandwich in passing. They munch away on their selection as they continue about their business of setting up for the night.

A farmhouse sits a short distance from the trail. An only window on the western face of the shanty captures the sun’s final rays, casting a golden fiery glow. It could almost be mistaken for a fire inside the house, but as the sun sinks lower to the horizon, the glow disappears into the abyss. The crew hustles to separate the milking cows from the rest of the herd. The wagons are commandeered back to back fashion. Eva slowly gets out of the wagon. With a heavy sigh of relief she exclaims,

“Another day ends. No wiser.”
